The Pinstriped Morningside Heights

對於許多球員和球迷來講，sabermetrics 太過複雜以致於某些結論無法被充分理解，以致於大家無法接受。而對於許多相信統計的人來講，卻又因為對於統計的了解有限，以致於高估了由這個方法對於棒球所能夠理解的範圍。

最近剛好有兩件事情讓我想要談一談這個主題，今天先談 Pudge 這個合約。

Tigers 簽下了 Pudge，四年 $40M。Rob Neyer 在他的2/06 ESPN 專欄裡談到了這個約，可想而知他的結論必然是這個約不值得。他立論的方式是從捕手這個位置明星球員老化的歷史來看 Pudge 未來的發展。

Lee Sinins 也在他 2/03的 ATMReports newsletter 裡面發揮了他慣有的毒舌來批評這個合約，下面這一段直接引自他的 newsletter:

If MLB awarded championships based on who can sign the most overrated player to the biggest contract, the Tigers would be pouring champagne over their heads and the police would be worried about a repeat of the 1984 car burning incidents. Rodriguez has only been over 18 RCAA once in his 13 year career (24 in 2000). He wasn't worthy of $10 million at his peak.

後者的毒舌遭到了批評，感謝diamondsutra 在我前幾天談 Schilling 那篇的 comment 裡面提供了 Dick Allen’s baseball blog 中的文章Must've got out of bed the wrong side 的看法，沒有訂閱免費的ATMReports newsletter 的人也可以在該文中一窺 Sinins 的原文。

Neyer 和 Sinins 的批評對不對？老實說，對於 Pudge 在這四年合約中表現的預測，我們很難說他們錯。連上面引述的這篇 blog 也只能說他不喜歡 Sinins 用這樣的方式來批評，可是他無法反駁 Sinins 的結論：1. Pudge 的數據並沒有想像中的好，即使他能重複 2003 的表現也不值這個合約；2. Pudge 的年齡和傷病史也不支持這樣一個合約。

Rich Allen 碰觸到了重要的關鍵，不過他可能並沒有清楚的意識到，以致於沒有繼續發揮。他說

……Lee, what the fuck are the Tigers supposed to do? You win 43 games and one of the great catchers of all time is available. Sure his RCAA isn't ideal, and his age isn't in his favour, but are you trying to tell me that there's anyone else out there that would be a better fit for the Tigers at this point in time? Would anyone else even come to the Tigers?

This is a very bad ballclub. The team needs to re-establish credibility any way it can. It can't build from within because the kids are already in the majors and look where it got them in 2003. Pudge may not be the all things being equal optimal signing, but all things aren't equal, particularly the Tigers. Within the game he has a reputation, and it's a very good one. The Tigers players (except for Brandon Inge) will be excited that Pudge is coming to town. The fans will be excited. …… Sabermetrics (in the wrong hands) forgets this too easily.

Buzz, wrong.

Joe Sheehan 是談論這個合約談的最好的作家。Pudge 對於 Detroit 的幫助非常有限，以他來取代 Tigers 今年的捕手，最多能夠多贏個幾場而已，一年 $10M 讓球隊從四十幾勝到五十幾勝，意義並不大。Tigers 不是 Yankees，$10M 在他們目前的 payroll 結構裡不是小錢。

但是，Tigers 在 AL Central。現在的不平衡賽程下，他們有大約 76 場比賽是跟 White Sox、Royals、Twins 和 Indians 打，將近主場的一半。在去年的表現之下，如果 front office 什麼都不做，今年有誰會來看球賽？簽下 Pudge 以及其他幾個球員來起碼可以放出訊息給球迷，讓他們進場看球賽。同時在 AL Central 如果其他幾隻球隊同時遇到受傷或低潮的麻煩，他們還可以『假裝』他們有競爭的實力。

如果今天是其他沒有好捕手的球隊為了未來四年進入季後賽簽下這個合約，這是蠢事一件。但是對於 Tigers 來講，除了 sabermetrics，我們還要看 business。我們必須給Mike Ilitch 和 Dave Dombrowski 他們應得的 credit。

Tigers 可能失算的地方在於他們可以從這個合約中脫逃的條款限制可能太嚴。就目前所看到的消息而言，大多是說如果 Pudge 因為腰椎的舊傷上 DL 超過 35 天的話他們可以在第二或第三年後中止合約，但是捕手容易受傷的地方很多，Pudge 有可能會因為其他的傷上 DL 而 Tigers 無法使用這個條款。他們可能別無選擇，這是 winner’s curse。

Tigers 簽下 Pudge 是 business，他自己的表現跟 clubhouse chemistry 都不是重點，那些東西都沒什麼好指望的。
